The Latin America Network on Internal Displacement (LANID) and Acts of Listening Lab invite you to:

“From the balso to the conuno” – A drawn conversation on internal displacement between Comunidad and Manuela Ochoa.

Comunidad is a social leader from Tumaco, Colombia. His love for music, as well as his concern for the forced recruitment of young people, led him to create a cultural center. Comunidad was displaced and currently lives in Bogotá.

Manuela Ochoa is an artist and research assistant at the Acts of Listening Lab.

We ask ourselves: How can music and culture support and transform displaced communities to strengthen their identity? What does it mean to be a social leader in a country at war? We will explore these questions through pictures, words, and music. We invite attendees to have a sheet of paper and a pencil during the conversation. No skill or artistic experience is required to participate in this space

By RID | Apr 14, 2026 The displacement of people within their own countries due to crises such as conflicts, disasters, and the effects of climate change is a major contemporary challenge, eliciting global concern about how to protect the displaced. The vast scale of this 'internal displacement' poses far-reaching questions for key debates around humanitarian aid, development, migration, sovereignty, rights, citizenship, identity, and social change. Yet knowledge of the issue is fragmented and highly dispersed across a range of academic and policy domains. This groundbreaking new publication brings together 45 contributions by leading researchers and practitioners, providing an essential point of reference for advancing these debates and raising the profile of internal displacement as a vital concern for research and policy agendas.
