Conflict-induced internal displacement is an on-going challenge in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Indeed, recent figures indicate that IDPs constitute up to 3 per cent of its population. Yet research on the lived experience of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the MENA region is limited.
The Middle East Research Network on Internal Displacement (MERNID) continues its series of conversations on internal displacement in the MENA region with this webinar discussion on the political identity of IDPs in Afghanistan and Syria. The webinar will be chaired by MERNID director, Dr Hana Asfour, and will encompass presentations from leading MERNID researchers:
· “Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of IDPs in Afghanistan on COVID-19” – Shapoor Hamid, Data Manager, Qara Consulting
· “Is It a Curse or a Grace? Gender in the Syrian Displacement Context” – Dr Saja Al-Zoubi, Lecturer in Gender, Forced Migration and Middle East Politics, University of Oxford
· “Identity Politics in Syria: Displacement, Identity Politics and Conflict” – Mohamad AlAshmar, Research Fellow, Syrian Centre for Policy Research
MERNID works to address the gaps in research on internal displacement in the MENA region by building a robust community of researchers and practitioners around this challenge in the region.
